Well, it’s ALL ANYONE IS TALKING ABOUT these days, of course. Morning radio was SIMPLY A-CHATTER on my drive in to work. Here’s the scoop: Warner Bros is coming under MAJOR FIRE for its new direct-to-video release, Frankencreepy, in which the eternally chic-as-fuck Daphne Blake gets ‘cursed’ during an adventure and is horrified to see her body morph from a size 2 to a size 8. (On a side note, if that’s a size 8, I’ll eat my wig, but that’s another post). Anyway, viewers are criticizing Warner Bros for the plot line, saying that it sends the wrong message about body image to children. Says blogger Tom Burns (The Good Men Project): ”It’s sad to think that my daughter can’t even watch a cartoon about a dog solving mysteries without negative body stereotypes being thrown in her face.” Oh, boo hoo.
It’s all just a tempest in a teapot, anyway – welcome to the internet. If anybody actually bothered to WATCH the episode, EVERYBODY loses what’s most precious to them (Fred loses the Mystery Machine, Shaggy and Scooby lose their appetites, Daphne loses her good looks, etc), but in the end, “the loss of Daphne’s regular appearance is proven to be a superficial thing, and not what actually matters the most to her.” Also, Fred, darling Fred, doesn’t even NOTICE that she’s gained a little weight. Awwww. Because he loves her for her who she is! (Or maybe because she’s just a beard and he’s NEVER been into her body… but that, too, is another post).
In a statement to the Huffington Post, Warner Bros claims that it is always sensitive ‘to obesity and self image, especially when it comes to programming made for children and a family audience.’ #TeamWarnerBros
