Host: Seth Meyers handled his hosting duties very nicely, with a bit of help from his friends. Former SNL alums, Amy Poehler & Andy Samberg plus Weird Al, who filled in for the obligatory singing and dancing, came on to lend a hand at various stages. I thought he was the perfect host; gracious, snarky, charming, put everyone at ease and deflected attention away from himself. He brought out the very funny Billy Eichner from “Billy on the Street” for a special BOTS Emmy edition. In the clip below, at one point, Billy accosts a woman and says, “You’re a lesbian, do you watch Orange Is the New Black?” “I do, but I’m not a lesbian,” the shocked woman cheerfully replies. Only in New York, kids.
Winners: After her win for Outstanding Actress in a Comedy, Julia-Louis Dreyfus got a big smooch from one-time “Seinfeld” guest star Bryan Cranston (who played Dreyfus’ love interest, dentist Tim Whatley.) The actors had joked about his “Seinfeld” appearance moments earlier when Dreyfus said she didn’t recall his stint. After the over-the-top, soap opera kiss, a woozy Dreyfus said, “Yeah, he was on ‘Seinfeld.” Lots of other wins that WERE expected; Modern Family, Jessica Lange, Jim Parsons… big winners like, “Breaking Bad”, “The Normal Heart” and “American Horror Story: Coven”. Everyone seemed to agree that he Cutest Director Nobody Ever Heard Of (and Best Man Bun) went to “True Detective’s” sexy Cary Joji Fukunaga.
Tearjerker: “The Normal Heart” won for Outstanding TV movie and Larry Kramer, the author and tireless activist, frail as he is, joined the cast, Ryan Murphy and producers onstage to receive the award. Long road, well-deserved. We lost lots of big named stars in the last 12 months but none are fresher than the loss of the brilliant Robin Williams. His old pal Billy Crystal did a moving tribute, followed by a few hilarious clips that you couldn’t help but tear up watching.
“We were such close friends. He would come to all of our great family functions: weddings, bar mitzvahs, that kind of thing. He would sit with my older immigrant relatives like he was one of the guys. And he would tell them about his journey from his little shtetl in Poland to America. One uncle of mine said, I came to America after World War II and I hitchhiked.” And Robin said, “I waited until there was a 747 and a kosher meal.’”
Upsets: Not a huge upset, but the Best Actor in a Drama Series was won by “Breaking Bad’s” Bryan Cranston over “True Dectective’s” Matthew McConaughey (Cranston said in his acceptance that even HE thought of voting for McConaughey) “American Horror Story’s” Kathy Bates beat out “The Normal Heart’s” Julia Roberts for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a TV Miniseries or Movie, which seemed a shock to everyone (including Julia herself, when they cut to her). And finally, as usual the wrong “Race” won – again. For the tenth time, “The Amazing Race” won for Outstanding Reality Competition, still in my opinion, less amazing than the not-nominated “RuPaul’s Drag Race”. Oh, well – there’s always next year.
