Identical twins from Belfast, Alan and Gary Keery (above), have just opened a new cafe in London, Cereal Killer that doesn’t sell artisanal, organic breakfast cereal, but rather old-school classics like Rice Krispies, Frosted Flakes and Special K. Brother Gary says the idea came to them when they were hungover one morning and all they really craved was cereal. They tried crowdfunding the project but didn’t have enough takers but the publicity has enabled them to get a loan and a sympathetic landlord. They offer British, American and global cereals all at £2.50 for a small bowl with a choice of milks and toppings such as banana or marshmallows. The most obscure cereal they have? An Oreo cereal from South Korea – “very hard to source”. Gary recommends having it with mini Oreos and chocolate milk. Also on the menu are “cereal cocktails” – a mix of different cereals together with different milks and toppings to create unique flavours. Whatever the flavors, I’ll bet they are cloyingly sweet. But Gary is confident that folks won’t just come for breakfast;

“Many people eat cereal throughout the day as a snack or a meal … we will be open until 10pm. My favourite at the moment are marshmallow-flavoured Rice Krispies – absolutely beautiful. We always have about 30 or 40 boxes at home.”

30 or 40 boxes? Well, I think this concept, as my friend Patrick suggested, is a slam-dunk for several locations in the states. Might I suggest Bushwick, Portland and Austin? (Photo: Lukas Chodorowicz; via The Guardian)
