Today would have been Elvis Presley’s 80th birthday, and it begins a yearlong celebration of his music. A new website, ElvisTheMusic.com goes live today, with a database of all things Elvis. Graceland is also live-streaming a big birthday celebration.
The Complete ’60s Albums Collection Vol. 1 was just released onto iTunes with highlights of all the records between ’60 and ’65 with newly mastered sound for the digital medium. Legacy Recordings will team with Spotify to reveal its own official music collection, the #Elvis80: The Fan Favorites Playlist. The label also promises a new project coming this summer and more releases throughout the year.
A new exhibit is in London now with artifacts from The King’s life in Elvis at the O2 with over 300 artifacts from Graceland including his cars, personal items, historical documents, stage costumes, guitars, gold and platinum records, photography in addition to video presentations. It will be on display for the next 8 months.
And next month, Julien’s Auctions will sell off his private planes on February 2nd, the Lisa Marie and Hound Dog II, which have been parked outside Graceland for over 30 years. While the planes are permanently grounded, the original interiors are a timecapesule just as tacky as Graceland. He was one of greatest entertainers of the 20th century, and the King of rock ‘n roll, NOT of good taste. (via Rolling Stone)
