Golden Globe winner Matt Bomer is set to star as the hunky – and tormented – Montgomery Clift in a new HBO biopic, Monty Clift. PERFECT CASTING! And… it’s about time!
Montgomery, of course, has been sadly relegated to the dustbin of matinee idols, while his contemporaries James Dean and Marlon Brando continue to adorn refrigerator magnets and postcards and screen savers and what-have-you. Which is sad. Clift was easily as interesting as the two of them if not more so. He was a hunk-and-a-half, a brilliant actor, a tortured homo, BFFs with Elizabeth Taylor, and a drug-addled mess later in his life. FABULOUS!
The high point of the upcoming biopic will surely be the accident that disfigured his oh-so-pretty face and started him on his long road to ruin.
On the evening of May 12, 1956, while filming Raintree County, Clift was involved in a serious auto accident when he smashed his car into a telephone pole after leaving a dinner party at the Beverly Hills home of his Raintree County co-star and close friend Elizabeth Taylor and her second husband, Michael Wilding. Alerted by friend Kevin McCarthy, who witnessed the accident, Taylor raced to Clift’s side, manually pulling a tooth out of his tongue as he had begun to choke on it. He suffered a broken jaw and nose, a fractured sinus, and several facial lacerations which required extensive plastic surgery (and never looked the same again, ruining his career). In a filmed interview, he later described how his nose could be snapped back into place. (via Wikipedia)
Let’s go over that again. So there he is. He’s partying with Liz, he’s wasted. He gets in his car and promptly drives into a tree. Elizabeth hears the crash, races out into the storm, RUNS DOWN HILL IN THE RAIN, CRAWLS INTO THE BURNING WRECKAGE, CRADLES HIS BLOODY HEAD IN HER LAP, HEARS HIM GURGLE AND CHOKE… THEN REACHES INTO THE MANGLED WOUND THAT ONCE WAS HIS FACE AND FISHES OUT THE TOOTH HE WAS CHOKING ON!
It’s the kind of scene EMMYS ARE MADE OF!
So… Lindsay should start dusting off her Liz Taylor wig and start petitioning to reprise the role, right?
