Yes, Jared Leto just bought an old military compound, once known as Lookout Mountain Air Force Station. It’s a 50,000-square-foot structure that features eight bedrooms, 12 bathrooms, an art studio, galleries, a film studio and much more. The complex was later known as Lookout Mountain Laboratory in Laurel Canyon, is not far from the Sunset Strip. It was built for its studios that documented atomic bomb testing in the Nevada desert. In ’99, photographer Jack Cannon told the LA Times;
“Every time you see an atomic explosion on TV, for a scare film or whatever, we filmed it.”
The nuclear-related work produced there — thousands of motion pictures and still photographs — was classified for decades, only ever by military and government personnel. They documented some 331 bomb blasts and produced training films too. For the past 20 years it’s had been the home of artist Mark Lipscomb and John Ladner. They bought it for $750,000 in 1994, and began trying to sell it in 2010 for $6.5 million. Leto reportedly paid $5 million. John Venti, a real estate agent who visited the compound a few years ago, said:
“I have never seen anything like this in my entire life. … It is an endless property with multiple levels and areas that aided in scientific experiments to rooms that looked like interrogation rooms as well as film and weapon vaults…”
The complex has 3-foot-thick concrete walls and a bomb shelter, two underground parking garages, a sound stage, three screening rooms and 17 climate-controlled film vaults. It’s kind of a mess in terms of style and will need some updating and renovations. But at 50,000 square feet, it is multi-functional, to say the least. Can’t you picture a 30 Seconds To Mars rehearsal space, a private concert theater, recording studio, art exhibits, awards show after-parties (he could invite half the nominees) all-night (clothing optional) pool parties and extended boy and girlfriend “sleep-overs”. This guy’s got it all, literal rock-star status, an Oscar, millions in the bank AND he looks like THAT.
