With “Style,” Taylor has, yet again, written a perfect pop song. It burbles along in a jaunty manner, telling the story of two lovers, both attractive, both stylish, who may or may not be cheating on each other. Is it about her and Harry Styles‘ doomed relationship? Obviously. But that’s just one layer to this onion. Kelsey McKinney, a Vox Culture reporter, scrutinizes the song and the video in a way that makes the Zapruder film look Blue’s Clues. She really gets down to the nitty-gritty of what’s going on. Nothing escapes her masterful gaze. Not one frame of the video or bit of song structure goes unexplored. It’s MAGNIFICENT. Why, Susan Sontag, herself, could not have come up with a finer interpretation.
Of course, it’s a lot of hoo-ha over something that, in the end, is really just completely vapid. I mean, just because you write a doctorate thesis on The Real Housewives of Atlanta, doesn’t make them deep. Or profound. And just because you understand what Taylor is doing, doesn’t make it anything more than what it is: pure pop confection.
