Yesterday Eva Mendes made a joke in an interview with Extra that “sweatpants are the number one cause of divorce in America.” The internet went crazy claiming that people can and should relax and wear whatever they want. Eventually Mendez apologized, rather brilliantly, to sweatpants on her Instagram:
Today, the even more brilliant Brian Moylan came to Mendes’s defense, arguing that she has a metaphoric point about relationships requiring attention and effort:
I will be the first person to defend any person’s right to do and wear whatever they want in their own home, even if they want to parade around in their birthday suit while watching old episodes ofNashville on the DVR. Hey, it’s your life, buddy. The difference is when you share your life and your home with someone else. My boyfriend, a man who spends more on clothes than some people do on rent, gets in the door after work and strips off his immaculately conceived outfit and puts on a pair of navy blue Adidas basketball shorts, what he likes to call “comfy pants.” I can’t stand it, and I see how it could lead to divorce.
When I heard what Mendes had to say, what I heard was not “sweatpants” and “divorce” but something more along the lines of, “If you let yourself slide in your relationship, it’s going to spell trouble.” – Brian Moylan on Time.com
That’s probably good advice from a guy I know to be in a very strong relationship, but here’s what I have to say on the subject…and truly I think it’s the final word:
I would wear heels and dresses and makeup for Ryan Gosling. I would wear lashes and corsets and whatever else he wants. I have a bunch of sweatpants at home, some of them rather expensive to be honest, and I’d gladly chuck them all if he doesn’t like them. If he wants me to keep them, I can get rid of my other pants. I don’t have any orange crocs but if Ryan likes those, I’d get them and wear nothing else. I’m ready to put in the work, Ryan, so call me and let’s do this.
