Dermatologist to the stars, Dr. Frederic Brandt died in Miami over the weekend but the cause of death is unclear at this point. His publicist has refused to comment on specifics, but Miami Herald reporter Lesley Abranavel says her sources say his death was a suicide, and says he had been suffering from depression. The New York Post reported that a parody of him on the Netflix show Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt sent him into a downward spiral…

“The show definitely deeply hurt him. He was being made fun of because of the way he looks.”

On Tina Fey’s much-loved new Netflix series, Martin Short played a dermatologist who is a dead-ringer (no pun) for Dr. Brandt. The Post had picked up on similarities weeks ago. Short’s character, Dr. Grant, has a similar hairstyle as the real-life Dr. Brandt and he is unable to speak properly due to the amount of plastic surgery he has had. The real Dr. Brandt didn’t have trouble speaking, btw.

Dr. Brandt practiced fillers on himself for years and administered them to superstar clients like Madonna, Stephanie Seymour and MANY others. It does seem mean that the Kimmy Schmidt character was named so similarly to Dr. Brandt, but to be honest, I worked in the beauty biz for YEARS and I didn’t make the connection, and so I doubt the general public was really aware of who Dr. Brandt was either. But if this was the cause for the poor man’s suicide, it is really unfortunate and sad. (via Observer)
