Broadway actor, drag performer and creator of one-woman show Genderosity Donald Shorter (A Chorus Line/La Cage Aux Folles) was the latest to be interviewed on PBS’ First Person series- exploring sexuality and gender identity, hosted by LGBTQ YouTuber Kristin Russo. In this episode, Shorter gives insight into his drag process, the inspiration for Genderosity, and the issues he has faced, not fitting into the ‘hypermasculine mold’ often propagated in the gay scene in NYC.
“There’s a lot of internalized homophobia in the gay scene. There seems to be this notion that however ‘straight-acting’ you are, there are so many rewards that present themselves in society for that. The more linked you are to a cisgendered, heterosexual male, the hotter you are! That just doesn’t make any sense.”
