About that NYT review: Her residency in Vegas is not “a sign of defeat.”  Her voice is not like “decaying manufacturing machinery.” Her performance was not “tentative and inconsistent.” The band was not “strategically lethargic.” The show did not “display a minimum of imagination and effort.” Far from being a “largely difficult two hours,” it flew by seamlessly. Contrary to the spectacle of an artist “in decline and trapped in a cage of her own making,” the audience was treated to a sincere romp through her greatest hits delivered with confidence and aplomb. Yes, she does have a kooky sentimental aesthetic (butterflies and things of that nature) but that played to the show’s vibe of down-home intimacy that included a couple of walk-abouts among the audience. Only a truly seasoned and confident artist could pull that off in a venue as vast and cavernous as the Colosseum. If her new single doesn’t go to #1 that says more about changes and trends in the current music industry than it does about her enormous contribution, incredible talent, and enduring appeal.
