The BFI (the British Film Institute) caught up with RuPaul’s Drag Race season 6 winner Bianca Del Rio and asked her about her favorite film of all time: Auntie Mame. For you heathens who have never seen it, Auntie Mame is the story of a young boy who is sent off to live with his eccentric, larger-than-life Auntie Mame, who introduces him to ART! and GLAMOUR! and LIFE! It stars the incomparable Rosalind Russell, in (arguably) her best role. “I think it has a massive gay following,” says Bianca, “because I think a lot of gays WANT an Auntie Mame. I wish I’d had one. Luckily, I’ve had a lot of ‘Uncle Mames’ – not necessarily family, but people who gave me that insight into life, to show me theater, to show me art, to show me the world. Which is stuff that I keep with me. And now that I’m older, I try to the same with a lot of the queens around me. When I was on RuPaul’s Drag Race one of the queens asked me how I got so smart, and I thought ‘What the fuck kind of question is that?’ but it was just being cultured, and nowadays we’re so on our phones and we’re so into the internet that we don’t really know about other things. Before you had to read a book, before you actually had to GO to the movies, so I gave her a list of all the movies that someone else gave me. So it was nice to kind of pass the torch.”
