By now, it’s pretty much common knowledge; Republicans HATE the federal government. Conservatives have always been skeptical about our government’s ability to solve people’s problems but not opposed to it existing. In 2015 conservatism has morphed into a radical anti-state, pro-corporate machine that operates on this thesis:
The government is always wrong, no matter what.
UNLESS there’s a disaster, that is…
Texas Senator Ted Cruz, one of the most radical anti-state conservatives, has been begging the federal government for assistance after his state was has had severe flooding, Cruz says;
“There are a series of federal statutory thresholds that have to be satisfied. Initially, it appears those thresholds are likely to be satisfied by the magnitude of the damage we’re seeing, Democrats and Republicans in the congressional delegation will stand as one in support of the federal government meeting its statutory obligations to provide the relief to help the Texans who are hurting.”
Cruz’s hypocrisy is all the more disgusting when you consider that is the SAME Tea Partier who voted AGAINST federal aid for victims of Hurricane Sandy because he deemed much of the spending to be ‘wasteful’. But screw the rest of the country when they need help, but please rescue Texas. Texas needs rescuing a lot, being the NUMBER ONE recipient of federal disaster relief aid.
Of course Cruz is technically right, the federal government does have statutory obligations to provide relief to Texans, regardless of their usual opposition to federal aid. So “free loading” Texans gets to have their cake and eat it too. Full disclosure: I’m from Texas and I know my friends and brother are NOT in Cruz’s camp, but those Republicans who are might want to rethink their position on government “help”, right about now.
