Gorgeously deconstructed paintings of nature run amuck by Valerie Hegarty . Positively demonic stuff, you MUST SEE!
Yes. This. All of it. So amazing. Like the art is trying to reclaim the walls. Like the materials have come to life and are struggling to free themselves from the canvas. Like the lines between reality and fantasy are bleeding together. Yes! Yes! Don’t you see? Space and time are colliding, dimensional planes are converging, ALL HELL IS LITERALLY BREAKING LOOSE!
From WeTheUrban:
NYC-based artist Valerie Hegarty’s artwork often poses as artifacts of art history gone awry. Ravaged paintings, melting canvas, cracked walls, weathered works are all the characteristics of Hegarty’s work… Working with fragile materials such as foamcore, paper, paint and glue, she exploits a scrupulous mimicry of objects only to demolish them by devices often associated with their historical significance.
The New Yorker called her work a look into “waning powers of a nation and fractured affairs of state.” Sure. Seems a bit more savage than that to me, a bit more visceral – like a rebellion against intellectualization, like a return to the primal instincts that fuel art. Whatever the motivation behind it, IT REALLY SINGS TO ME. I’d love a whole house done in this aesthetic.
