The U.S. Department of Treasury announced yesterday plans to remove Alexander Hamilton’s face from the $10, and replace him with a female who has “contributed to the development of democracy in the United States.”
Secretary of the Treasury Jack Lew announced the initiative on Youtube, and asked people to submit their suggestions using the hashtag #TheNew10 on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks, and Eleanor Roosevelt were instant frontrunners of course, with Betty Ford, Shirley Chisholm, Abigail Adams, and Dolly Madison also getting some love.
Twitter being Twitter, however, went in another direction entirely. See some of the more… creative… suggestions below.
Here are some guidelines from the FAQ on the campaign’s website:
The person should be iconic and have made a significant contribution to — or impact on — protecting the freedoms on which our nation was founded. By law, only a portrait of a deceased person may be included on banknotes. Historically, the Secretary has relied on the Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP) to provide advice on themes, symbols and concepts to be used on currency.
Who do YOU think it should be?
