Saturday night was the 25th Annual GLAAD Awards held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. I was there, and after the jump, you can check out all the amazing pictures and hear all the gossip.
The big takeaway from the evening, of course was Big Freedia’s win in the Best Reality competition. Congratulations to everybody at WOW who worked on it, everybody at Fuse who supported it, and Freedia herself, SO HAPPY FOR YOU, YAY.
The big celebrity sighting of the evening was Lupita Nyong’o. Everybody gasped when she appeared on the red carpet, and craned their necks as she walked in the room, and gasped again as she walked on stage – the woman has STAR POWER. She’s just MAGNETIC. You CANNOT TAKE YOUR EYES OFF OF HER. Well, just look at her. In her blue and gold Antonio Berudi gown, Louboutin shoes, Judith Lieber clutch and Grace Jones Leroy’s Place ring. Beyond fabulous. And I lovelovelove her new hair cut.
We all collectively left our bodies when Naomi Campbell walked onstage in that floaty leopard gown and afro. She then proceeded to do runway back and forth and back and forth onstage and I tell you THE FAGGOTS WENT BESERK. Well, can you IMAGINE? It’s a moment I’ll never forget as long as I live. AS LONG AS I LIVE. Then, when we couldn’t possibly love her ANY MORE, she gave a shoutout to Carmen Carerra in the audience, saying she loved her, she supported her, and she welcomed her into the inner circle of supermodels, to which Carmen stood up, regally waved to the crowd, then made a little heart sign with her hands and said “I LOVE YOU NAOMI.” It was all too fabulous, I can’t tell you. To think: We knew her when. SOOOO PROUD OF YOU!
J-Lo received the Vanguard award because she’s always on the cutting edge of fashion, of course, and she’s always cherished her gay fans, so why not. She wore the MOST AMAZING OUTFIT OF THE EVENING – a black see-through Zuhair Murad dress with sparkly blue veins running up and down – and it was EVERYTHING. When she took to the stage it was as if Venus herself was descending from Mount Olympus, such was the thundering ovation she received.
Wee Casper Smart was there. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. I LIKE HIM. He seems to be losing a bit of his twinkiness and becoming more of a man, the longer he stays with her. But that’s OK. They seem happy together. So I’m happy. We’re all happy. LONG LIVE JENNIFASPER!
Rita Moreno. Don’t get me started. Bit of an attention shifter, that one. But what can you say, what can you do? She’s a fucking EGOT. You can’t take the mic away from her. You’ve got to just let her tire herself out. Talk until she winds down. And not to be shady, but she wore that outfit to the Emmy’s last year. I KNOW. I’m not reading an old lady for wearing the same thing twice. I’m reading an old lady for being a windbag.
Anne Jeffries – the West Coast Sylvia Miles.
Wowlebrity Chaz Bono, looking trim and handsome.
And here’s the REAL TAKEAWAY of the evening: The pair of autographed Speedos from Tom Daley up for bid at the silent auction, beforehand. Starting price? $2,200. No takers. And no pre-sniffing allowed, they were encased in lucite, damnit. I was so excited I knocked them over with a great clatter and shriek and for one horrible moment thought I would be forced to buy them. Whoops.
