Just weeks after Channing Tatum appeared at Comic-Con to hype his role as New Orleans thief Remy LeBeau, a.k.a. Gambit, it looks like the movie is in trouble. Tatum is planning to leave the project because his deal with Fox fell apart. The studio was testing actresses to star with Tatum, including Lea Seydoux, but insiders suggest that director Rupert Wyatt will soon have to find a new leading man. The Wrap says;
It’s unclear whether Tatum and his producing partner Reid Carolin plan to remain involved in a producing capacity, or whether Simon Kinberg and Lauren Shuler Donner will move forward on their own.
Apparently, Tatum’s reps are still in talks with the studio but acknowledged that
“something is up.”
The film has been a passion project for Tatum for a while now. His attachment encouraged 20th Century Fox to ramp up production but now Tatum also has larger ambitions. In a recent profile, Carolin said that he and Tatum are planning to make their directorial debut soon, so it’s possible that the star’s desire to get behind the camera is factoring into this decision. Tatum also slated to star in 23 Jump Street for Sony. Gambit is scheduled for release on October 7, 2016, so they’d better get busy, huh? (via The Wrap)
