Most recording artists, musicians – whatever you want to call them, have a “VIP Meet and Greet”, that gives fans a few minutes, prior to the concert with said artist. For $400, you want a record of the encounter, right? Well, with Avril Lavigne you get one – an awkward one, as these photos attest. Security, apparently told these folks, there was no touching the star and the weirdness is palpable. Really? You don’t get a hug or even an arm around the shoulder?
Speaking from personal experience, I’m here to tell you that if/ when you meet Michelle Obama, you are VERY likely to get a hug. In February, I was lucky enough to be at the New Museum for an event with the First Lady and twenty eighth graders. After speaking a boy the benefits of drinking water, etc, every one of those kids, and their teachers, got a hug from her. When meeting her for the first time, myself, I leaned in to shake her hand and, as you can see at the end of this video clip, I got pulled in for a nice hug. Maybe she was just in a huggy mood that day, with all those kids, but she does project the feeling that she’d hug you, right? Maybe Avril’s shy, but she’s not an awkward teen anymore. So “man-up” and take note, hon. It’s a cliché but hugs ARE free, so if your fans are paying that kind of dough, I think you should kiss them on the mouth. But no tongue, please.
