The American Family Association, the far-right group, has specifically told its members to do the following:
“…refuse to accept the Harvey Milk stamp if offered by your local post office. Refuse to accept mail at your home or business if it is postmarked with the Harvey Milk stamp. Simply write ‘Return to Sender’ on the envelope and tell your postman you won’t accept it.”
For the AFA, it doesn’t seem to matter what it’s in the mail. What matters is whether the stamp shows the face of a gay man – and if it does, you shouldn’t even open the envelope. (I guess their thinking goes, if enough Americans rise up against the stamp, people will stop using them. Can you spell “backfire”?) One woman, in an experiment, decided to test their commitment by sending a $5 donation to the AFA in an envelope with a Harvey Milk stamp, to see which they value more: the financial support or the bizarre anti-gay animus. (Can you say, “cut off your nose to spite your face?”) BTW, it’s worth noting that Post Office’s Harvey Milk commemorative is a “forever” stamp, which means it can be used for first-class mail – indefinitely. Snap! Lick that, AFA!
