Remember looking forward to a new music video and actually tuning into TV to watch it? Maybe not. If you’re over 40, you’d better lie down. This classic, directed by the late, great Herb Ritts (also choreographed by Herb) was shot 24 years ago next month. It’s not quite an anniversary, as it was September 13, 1990. Everything about this video, starting with the song is perfection. Herb was a master at creating great images of pop and movie stars alike (just Google his name, or put it into YouTube to be amazed.) But this video looks like one of those things of magic synchronicity. Because he was such an amazing photographer, when he shot a video, you could really freeze any frame for a great image. Janet has originally planned to wear a dress, but Herb envisioned her in just a black top and a pair of jeans (…and, ultimately, blond hair). Besides the otherworldly salt flats location (Herb shot there many, many times over the years) it features cameos by the beautiful Antonio Sabàto, Jr. and Djimon Hounsou, both in their prime. Does this look a quarter of a century old? Not in any way. It could have been shot last week. It’s is ranked #13 on Rolling Stone’s Top 100 Music Videos and is on MTV’s list of the 100 Greatest Videos Ever Made. Watch. If there was a Herb Ritts today, maybe Beyoncé (after the split?) should chill out and go for this kind of vibe. Good luck ever topping it, though.
