gern rudi

August 8, 1922– Do I have your attention boys & girls? This story is significant. This story is fabulous & this story is true. A little Viennese Jewish gay baby boy Rudi Gernreich was born this day. Little Rudi fled Austria when he was 16 years old to escape the Nazis. Following the 1938 Anschluss, the Gernreichs, mother & son, made their way to LA. They survived on the traditional pastries that his mother baked & the son would sell door to door.

Gernreich’s first job was working in a morgue washing cadavers for autopsy. Gernreich:

“I grew up overnight, I do smile sometimes when people tell me my clothes are so body-conscious I must have studied anatomy. You bet I studied anatomy.”

Gernreich was enamored of dancer-choreographer Martha Graham. At 20 years old he became a dancer with the Lester Horton Dance Company. In 1947, Gernreich danced with Bella Lewitzky when they were members of Horton’s troupe. Beginning in the late 1960s, Lewitsky & Gernreich would become innovative collaborators in the world of Modern Dance His remarkable costumes would become part of the set & part of the plot for her dances. Gernreich continued to collaborate with Lewitzky, designing sets & costumes for Pas De Bach (1977), Rituals (1979), Changes & Choices (1981), all of them danced by  company member & my longtime friend, the beautiful dancer-choreographer Walter Kennedy, in his dancing prime.

60 years ago, Gernreich & his lover at the time, Harry Hay, formed The Mattachine Society, the very first Gay Rights group in the USA.  Still, he could not come out of the closet, which seems crazy when you consider that he was an important figure in the worlds of fashion & dance, not really the territory of straight guys. Now in the 21st century we can hardly imagine how difficult & dangerous it was to be openly gay. You could lose your job, your friends & family, even your life. Gernreich did not actually come out until after his death when the estate with his partner of 31 years, Oreste Pucciani, provided an endowment for American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) in their names. Pucciani was chairman of UCLA’s French Language Department, was instrumental in bringing Jean Paul Sartre to the attention of Americans. He was also a pivotal figure in the Gay Rights movement.

Hay & Gernreich are the main characters of the terrific play The Tempermentals by Jon Marans. It opened to rave reviews Off-Broadway in spring 2010, winning many awards including the Drama Desk Award for Best Ensemble Cast. Fantastic gay actor Michael Urie (who also has a birthday today) originated the role of Rudi Gernreich, & received a Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Lead Actor.

Gernreich’s most important influence came in the 1960s when he was the first designer to use cutouts in clothes. He was also the first to use vinyl & plastic in fashion. Along with his model-muse Peggy Moffitt, he helped popularize androgyny in women’s fashion, putting men’s suits & hats on women, the first to design men’s underwear for women. He designed the first see-through clothing. Gernreich designed the first soft transparent bra, the “no bra” bra that torpedoed the torpedoes. He invented clothing based on leotards & tights. He used hardware such as zippers, & dog leash clasps as decoration. He was responsible for the first designer jeans. Most famously, Gernreich designed the first thong bathing suit.

Photograph by Nelson Tiffany, LA Times, 1968

Gernreich spent most of his productive life entirely aware that clothes were ideas in material form. His innovations embraced the new concept of “lifestyle” in his soft bathing suits, thongs, body-clothes & tube dresses, in his unisex looks & his signature playful witty look which celebrated the removal of restriction & conformity. Gernreich gave the world the notion that a piece of clothing could embody a larger sense of freedom & liberation instead of restriction. It must have had something to do with his being gay, & of course being a dancer, that informed his vision of how a dressed body should float with ease in & around every situation.

I love the conceptualist fashions of the 1960s: High Art Fashion dressing up as theatre. Today, the stereotypical gay fashion has been appropriated by straight culture. The gay S&M clothing once an underground subculture has gone mainstream. Slings are a smart home decor accessory. In the 1960s & 1970s Gernreich was very cutting edge, but today would he be cutting edge?

From graphic collections inspired by clowns & Kabuki to his infamous “monokini”, the topless bathing suit he introduced to the world in 1964, Gernreich will always be famous for his avant-garde & scandalous designs. In 1967, Time magazine proclaimed Gernreich to be:

“The most way-out, far-ahead designer in the USA.”

Gernreich closed his own company in 1968, but he continued to design. In 1970, he produced one of his most conceptual collections, featuring barely-there, utilitarian clothes that were made to be unisex. The clothing represented Gernreich’s vision of a future where nudity would be equated with freedom, rather than gender or sexuality.

He continued to show controversial collections until he retired in 1981. Always adventurous, he embarked on a second career as a maker of a line of gourmet soups. Gernreich was an early Gay Rights pioneer. I like to think of what he would have thought of our era with LGBT people fully represented in the media & with full Marriage Equality in the USA, but he left this world early, taken by that damn cancer in 1985. He was just 62 years old.

#HamptonsReport: Martha Stewart on “The Most Beautiful Street to Walk on at 6AM”

134-137_H_F_CoverStory_HomeDesign_15.indd

I’m headed out to The Hamptons to visit friends for the weekend, so I thought I’d check in with Martha Stewart. She talked to Hamptons Magazine about her house there. Everyone is constantly talking about how fancy-pants it is out there, and people DO like to show off but honestly, it’s one of THE most beautiful spots in the country. Farms in proximity to the ocean with wooded areas and the most picturesque streets and houses, it is really stunning… tell us about it, Martha…

What’s your favorite thing about having a house here?
This street is the most beautiful street to walk on at 6 am with the dogs—very few cars, a few surfers with their CB radios on to find out where the waves are, but very pleasant. We go on the beach until 8 am. Everybody with a dog is on the beach, and those are the people you want to talk to early in the morning.

Would you say it’s a more private-time place for you than your homes in Westchester and Maine?
I love having a lot of people at the house, but not too frequently because I really like to use this as a place of restoration. And I love having my grandchildren out here. They’re great swimmers, and they love the beach and the pool.

Do you go to any of the local farmstands?
I do. I go to the one on Sagg Main (Pike Farms, 82 Sagg Main St., Sagaponack), on the right-hand side past the Sag [Harbor Variety] store; that one is a regular. My other favorite is Round Swamp Farm (184 Three Mile Harbor Road, East Hampton; 97 School St., Bridgehampton, 324-4438).

So what’s next? You’re always on to the next thing…
Yes, we have a new book, my 85th, called Martha Stewart’s Appetizers.

The focus of this is on the culinary delight, the tiny bite. Tell me about the hors d’oeuvres in here.
When I have a dinner party, I don’t serve very many hors d’oeuvres because the dinner is usually quite hearty. But if there’s not going to be a big dinner, I serve many of these kinds of hors d’oeuvres—deviled eggs, cold soups in little cups, spicy shrimp, open-faced tarts. They’re not fussy; they’re not what you’d get at a beneft or in New York City, but they’re delicious.

More about Utter Inn:

This place is unlike any other: an art project by Mikael Genberg which offers an underwater accommodation for the public. The facility is entered through a typical Swedish red house located on the surface of the water.

The guests of Utter Inn arrive at the port of Vasteras and are taken out one kilometre on Lake Malaren with an inflatable boat. After receiving all the instructions guests need, they are then left alone.

If guests prefer deluxe accommodation, someone can deliver dinner by boat in the evening. Guests can use an inflateable canoe to visit the closest uninhabited island. Guests can also swim, sunbathe or watch the fish (from both upstairs and downstairs) at the hotel. It’s a remarkable feeling to go to bed while the fish surround and watch you carefully.  – Via Private Islands Online

#BornThisDay: Make-Up Artist, Way Bandy

bandy big

August 9, 1941Way Bandy made up some of the planet’s most beautiful & accomplished women, & by “made up” I don’t mean imagined, although he did do that in a way. He called it ”faces designed by” & his clients included Elizabeth Taylor, Raquel Welch, Catherine Deneuve, Lauren Hutton, Farrah Fawcett, Barbra Streisand, Gloria Vanderbilt, Lee Radziwill, Cher, Sigourney Weaver & Cheryl Tiegs.

On the night he left this world, a photograph of Bandy with another of his ladies, Nancy Reagan, was sent to his hospital room from the White House.

Taylor wrote:

“Bandy was like an artist using a palette.”

Photographer Francesco Scavullo claimed:

”Way Bandy was not only one of the greatest makeup artists of our time, but also one of the most beautiful men in mind & spirit.”

Bandy worked with all the great fashion photographers: Richard Avedon, Irving Penn, Helmut Newton, Horst, & Hiro. His book Designing Your Face (1977) was a big bestseller.

When Bandy was taken by HIV in 1986, The NY Times obituary stated that he died of “unknown causes”, that he was a bachelor, & it was his wish that survivors not be identified. He was cremated. He had always guarded his private life, but he died during an era when it was thought too risky to identify AIDS as the disease that took him. Yet, more than 200 friends, fans & associates showed up for his memorial service. When he passed, not even his closest friends knew his real age  & they didn’t even know his real name.

Bandy had taken the media by storm when he transformed middle-aged Watergate whistle-blower Martha Mitchell into a magazine cover girl shot by Scavullo in 1974.  Scavullo, Bandy, & his BFF Hair stylist, Maury Hobson collaborated for nearly 20 years, producing covers shots of everyone from Tatum O’Neal to Ali MacGraw to Jerry Hall.

The Fashion Industry was shocked when Bandy got sick. He was a health nut who lived on juices, took vitamins daily, & was a vegetarian & Buddhist. When he went on book tours Bandy required that bottled water be placed in his hotel rooms because he was afraid of the impurities in water from the tap. He had not been sick in 2 decades. But when the editor of Vogue, Grace Mirabella, confronted him about his coughing & weight loss, she & Bandy’s agent had him admitted to Cornell Medical Center on August 6, 1986, just days before his 45th birthday, & he was gone within a week. That’s what the plague was like in the mid-1980s. People died miserably, but fast. If he had been diagnosed with cancer or heart disease, it would have been considered the territory of medical science & he might have received help earlier. Unfortunately, AIDS involved politics. Bandy was not an AIDS activist before he got sick. It was commonly assumed that anyone crusading against AIDS probably had the disease, & he thought it would be bad for business.

After his passing, Bandy’s friends & collaborators learned that was born Ronald Duane Wright in Birmingham, Alabama. He had once taught college English, he had been married, & that he fell in love with NYC while on vacation in 1965. He stayed & the wife went back South. He rechristened himself as Way Bandy, a name he came up with on a whim, started a new career & got his nose done.

In 1969, he became the director of the makeup department at Charles Of The Ritz. He left in 1971 to become a freelance makeup artist, proved himself a genius & became very, very wealthy. Ironically, he said:

”Real beauty is inner. By the experiences & opportunities of our lifetimes, we enrich our souls & earn our natural beauty.”

Bandy’s obituaries never mentioned it, but he had been in a relationship with Michael Gardine, a writer & antiques dealer, for 15 years. The couple shared an apartment in NYC & owned homes in Nantucket & Key West.

I feel that this may seem like a sad story, but more so when I tell you that I had long planned for Scavullo to shoot the cover for my first album Vicodin & Jockstraps with Bandy doing my make-up. Now that will never happen.

I’m out in the Hampton’s this weekend where Roy Lichtenstein: Between Sea and Sky exhibit at Guild Hall just opened. It is SO beautiful out here that you can’t help but be inspired visually. The new exhibit showcases 30 years’ worth of the artist’s landscapes and seascapes really illustrates this beautifully. Guild Hall’s museum director and chief curator Christina Mossaides Strassfield says;

“It was a theme he went back to many times, even if we didn’t expect that from a Pop artist. When you see this exhibit, you’re going to see that, clearly the East End was in his consciousness. The moving of the waves, the moving of the clouds —it’s all a part of being out here.”

But the main appeal of the East End (of Long Island) for Lichtenstein was as much about what was he NOT here, specifically the New York art world. Jack Cowart says, recalling visits to their Southampton home and studio in the 1970s, when he was a museum curator.

“Both [wife] Dorothy and Roy were a little burned out by the intensity of the art scene. I always heard them speak of being ‘refugees’ and wanting to get to a less hectic place. It’s hard to think of Southampton today as not being hectic, but when they moved out here, it was removed, the winters in particular. [Living here] gave Roy space— mental space as well as physical space.”

In an interview for the exhibition catalog, Lichtenstein’s assistant, James de Pasquale (who worked with the artist from 1972 until 1997, the year Lichtenstein died), say thats the main res
on for being out here was to get away from SoHo, then the center of the New York art scene;

“He wasn’t always being bothered. He was able to come out here, finish a whole group of paintings, and really be able to make a statement. And the guy loved to work!”

Roy Lichtenstein: Between Sea and Sky runs through October 12 at Guild Hall.

James Franco to Play Twins In ’70s-era Porn-Themed HBO Series

This could be interesting: Variety has announced that HBO  ordered a pilot from The Wire creator David SimonThe Deuce will be a period drama about the porn industry in the ’70s and ’80s, with James Franco attached to star and exec produce.

The Deuce set in the Times Square demimonde of the 1970s and 1980s, explores the legalization and subsequent rise of the porn industry in New York, looking into the rough-and-tumble world of midtown Manhattan until the rise of HIV, the violence of the cocaine epidemic and the renewed real estate market all ended the bawdy turbulence. The project is partly inspired by the career of twin brothers who were players in the Times Square world and became fronts for mob control of the volatile and lucrative sex industry.

Franco will play both twins, in addition to co-producing the series.

Movie Trailer: Abigail Breslin Turns the Tables on Her Would-Be Attackers In “Final Girl”

In Final Girl a group of charismatic yet sadistic boys (aren’t they all?) trick a different girl every night into meeting them for a date with the intention to hunt and kill her. However, “their horrifying ritual takes a turn when they select the beautiful Veronica (Abigail Breslin) as their next victim. When the hunt begins, the boys soon realize they messed with the wrong girl.” (via Coming Soon)

I usually like these kinds of horror movies, and I definitely like the cast: Wes Bentley (The Hunger Games, American Beauty), Alexander Ludwig (The Hunger Games), Cameron Bright (The Twilight Saga), and Abigail Breslin... Unfortunately the movie is written and directed by the loathesome Tyler Shields (who you might recall, once set a $100,000 Birkin bag on fire for “ART”), so I don’t know if I can actually see this in good conscience. Also, the overall effect looks very low rent (and not in a good way) – like a bad CW show.

Says Tyler:

“the idea behind Final Girl was no CGI, no fake effects. I wanted it to be as real as it could be. The fights are real, the cold was real and therefore, the performances are real. It was certainly a challenge, but I think everyone in the movie will agree it was worth it.”

The Greatest Baewatch Ever: Zac Efron Is Confirmed to Star With Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson In Upcoming “Baywatch” Movie

Oh my god. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson just confirmed some very necessary news that I didn’t even realize was going to be a thing. Mr. Rock tweeted a welcoming announcement to Zac Efron on the upcoming Baywatch movie project, which he promises to be “big, fun and RATED R”—like when he drinks.

So let’s get this straight. The Rock and Zacky are buds, and they’re both going to be in the same film. On a beach. In red shorts. WITH BABY OIL. (As according to the Tweet above.) Taking their shirts off like this in front of a sunset:

zac-efron-takes-shirt-off-with-bear

(I hope.) But more importantly, WILL THEY MAKE OUT? My mind is going INSANE!!!

According to The Hollywood Reporter

The story centers on a by-the-book and very serious lifeguard (Johnson) who is forced to team up with a young rule-flouting hothead (Efron) in order to save their beach from environmental destruction at the hands of an oil tycoon. The Baywatch casting is a cresting of a wave of sorts for the actor who, due to his surprising and successful turn opposite Seth Rogen in Neighbors, caused both audiences and industry execs to see him in a new light, beyond the teen heartthrob shadow that followed him. It also has made him a wanted man, whos is now working across several studios and practically back to back.

So, again, WILL THEY MAKE OUT?!!

OMG. This can’t come soon enough!

Movie Pilot reports that Warner Bros. insiders who attended a secret screening of the film for the crew and studio execs are claiming that the film — which was a “nearly finished” cut — received a standing ovation, with Ben Affleck’s Batman stealing the show and the audience’s favor during the course of the film.

Den of Geek Reports:

That screening was, we’re told, a glowing success – to the point where Zack Snyder‘s movie received a “standing ovation.”

Warner is said to be so impressed with Affleck’s performance as Batman that it’s apparently in the process of making an extended, “Golden deal”, which could see the actor play the Caped Crusader in a trilogy of stand-alone movies, not the single outing already announced.

All told, this deal could see Affleck in the role of Batman for the next 10 years or so.

“Basically, Warners are now working their movie universe around Ben’s Batman,” our source says.

Of course, let’s be real: A standing ovation from the producing company’s employees and executives? Seems legit.

Picture it: 4:30AM, you hear a noise. You get out of bed, creep downstairs to investigate, and what do you find? A CLOWN WITH A FUCKING AXE! Whaaaaaat? NOOOOOO. He chases you. You run. He swings the axe. He misses. He swings again. And again and again. You scuffle. In your blind panic you reach out, you rip off the mask…. and you RECOGNIZE HIM AS AN ACQUANTANCE? What the fuck is going on? He collects himself, he grabs the mask and the axe and runs off.

That’s what authorities say happened to a North Carolina woman last night. After telling the officers what happened, the woman decided to go to a judge and request an arrest warrant for her acquaintance.

Police have not released the suspect’s name and a motive for the attack was not immediately clear.

Movie deal pending. (via HuffPo)

As I’m sure you’ve heard by now the Fantastic Four movie just tanked, taking only $26.2m in the wake of poor reviews and audience derision.

If, however, you are absolutely bound and determined to watch a Fantastic Four movie, might I suggest THIS never-released 1994 ultra-low budget version by Roger Corman? Says Comicbook.com: “The infamous film was so cheesy, under-budgeted, and just plain bad, that Marvel prevented it from ever reaching movie theaters. But the Internet being the treasure chest that it is, unearthed, and posted the entire ninety-minute spectacle for fans’ streaming (dis)pleasure.”

Watch it in all its camp glory below. It’s GOT to be better than the Trank version.

Eddie Redmayne stars as trans icon Lili Elbe, an artist who had sexual reassignment surgery in the 1930s, in the upcoming flick The Danish Girl. He spoke to Out magazine about preparing for the role, and how his research impacted his own views.

“My greatest ignorance when I started was that gender and sexuality were related,” he says. “And that’s one of the key things I want to hammer home to the world: You can be gay or straight, trans man or woman, and those two things are not necessarily aligned.”

Redmayne says he thoroughly researched transgender theory and history, reaching out to prominent British trans activists like Paris Lees and April Ashley for guidance. He also asked trans Jupiter Ascending director Lana Wachowski for advice.

“People were so kind and generous with their experience, but also so open. Virtually all of the trans men and women I met would say, ‘Ask me anything. They know that need for cisgender people to be educated. I felt like, I’m being given this extraordinary experience of being able to play this woman, but with that comes this responsibility of not only educating myself but hopefully using that to educate [an audience]. Gosh, it’s delicate. And complicated.”

As for how he sees himself, Redmayne noted that he does not think in a gendered way. “I suppose it depends what you think of as masculine and feminine,” he said. “I was musical, and I was into theater and arts, but I was also into sports, so I had quite a broad spectrum. I can also totally see that other people see a femininity in me.”

That’s for sure. He IS a pretty man. Check out pics from the article below.
