Every fashionista for decades has coveted a Birkin Bag from Hermès, but did you know where the name comes from? It was created over 30 years ago and named for french model and muse Jane Birkin. It has become THE timeless It bag —one with a five-(or even six) figure price tag! And if you’ve got the cash, that doesn’t mean you can get it anytime you want either. The waitlist can be years and you might not get the color you want.
But now the bag’s namesake wants nothing to do with it anymore. According to a statement released by PETA –People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals– Birkin was moved to act when she found out how crocodiles and alligators were harmed in the process of the bag’s production.
“Having been alerted to the cruel practices endured by crocodiles during their slaughter for the production of Hermès bags carrying my name … I have asked Hermès Group to rename the Birkin until better practices responding to international norms can be implemented for the production of this bag.”
Great PR move. No, seriously, why not shame them into action? PETA notes that this comes in the wake of an investigation into alligator slaughter practices at the farms that supply the luxury label. But seriously, how did she THINK they made “alligator bags”? Wait for them to be road kill or commit suicide?
Well, if for some reason you still don’t care about the treatment of alligators or Jane Birkin and aren’t angry yet… just recall that Kanye West bought one for a then one-year-old North to draw on for mommy Kim Kardashian. There goes a year’s salary for most people. As I’ve said before, kids ruin EVERYTHING.
