Yes, Divine is playing New York after a LONG absence. Well, Mimi Imfurst (AKA, Braden Chapman) is giving us Divine in a new play she’s conceived, Divine/Intervention. It’s playing the Fringe Festival this month. They just finished a smash run in Philly and here’s what the press had to say;
“A serious and often moving bio drama about the counter-culture icon known as Divine [and] how a drag queen’s psyche divides between the ego and the alter-ego, between male and female, between actor and character. Strong impressive performances” –Philadelphia Inquirer
“You should see this deliciously dark production that is superbly performed.” –Philadelphia Magazine
“Holy Shit, this play stands its ground! It’s seriously an artfully crafted story that needs to be seen.” –Philly Gay Calendar
“DIVINE/INTERVENTION is a compelling portrait of a public figure and a private person who died too soon, but whose impact lives on in his films and in this heartfelt tribute.” –Phindie
Not bad, huh? I know, I’m dying to see it too. (Mimi will surely give me some tickets after this nice plug, right?) Well, even if I have to pay, I’m going. Bobby Goodrich is Divine IN drag and Ryan Walter plays Divine out of drag, both move in mirror image throughout the play. It runs from August 16 – 29th in NYC. Ticket info here.
