Dane DeHaan is up-and-coming young actor James Dean. Robert Pattinson is the Life magazine photographer who thinks the kid has potential and wants to make him a STAR. “He’s unreliable,” he says to his editor when pitching the story “he’s evasive…. he’s AN ARTIST!” The film follows the pair as they travel to Los Angeles, New York, and Dean’s home state of Indiana, developing an intense friendship (hubba hubba) along the way.
Directed by Anton Corbijn (A Most Wanted Man), the film also stars Ben Kingsley and Joel Edgerton.
The trailer vaguely looks like a Lifetime biopic, but Anton is the real deal, so I’m hoping this is more Capote than Donatella. And for some reason I feel like Robert was offered the role of James Dean first and turned it down to play the photographer. Which would have made more sense. Dane is exhilerating – a real actor’s actor – but is he physically right for the part? I’m withholding judgment, but my first thought after watching this is NO. He looks strangely middle-aged with those bushy eyebrows and that hunched demeanor. The spitting image of Bennett Cerf actually. Anybody? Anybody? BENNETT CERF? Oh ha ha ha ha.
