Of course Meryl Streep can sing. She’s Meryl Streep. She can do anything. She was wonderful in Mama Mia. She was transcendant in Into the Woods. And now? Now, she plays an over-the-hill rock-n-roller in the new movie Ricki and the Flash. And it looks….. DREADFUL. Omg. Far be it from me to malign the woman but HOLY CRAP. And from the sound of this audio clip, we aren’t missing anything by skipping this one. Listen to her screech through Lady Gaga‘s “Bad Romance” below.
From Attitude:
In preparation for the role, the 66-year-old triple Oscar winner – who plays a woman who abandons her family to live out her dream of being a rock star – learnt to play guitar with Neil Young, and enlisted co-star Rick Springfield for help with working on her vocals.
Director Jonathan Demme (Philadelphia) told Billboard that Street didn’t use playback during production.
“We’re not sweetening it up on the soundtrack. It’s performance! I have to say with our band – I shouldn’t say it, but I want to say what I feel in my heart – Ricki and the Flash blow away every original,” he said.
Not quite sure about THAT, but there you go.
